Academic Honesty

Academic honesty is comprised of a set of values and skills that promote personal integrity and good practice in teaching, learning and assessment. At St. Joseph High School, we promote these qualities in all areas of study and ensure staff and students understand their roles and responsibilities in upholding these values. AUTHENTICITY AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY Intellectual property rights include patents, registered designs, trademarks, moral rights and copyright and are generally protected by national and international law. An authentic piece of work is one based on the student’s individual and original ideas and work of others fully and appropriately acknowledged with proper citation and bibliography. Malpractice includes, but is not limited to, the student or any other person gaining an unfair advantage in one or more assessment component through: Plagiarism: includes the representation of the ideas or work of another person as their own. Collusion: supporting malpractice by another student, as in allowing one’s work to be copied or submitted for assessment by another. Duplication of Work: presentation of the same work for different assessment components and/or diploma requirements. Any other behavior that gains an unfair advantage for a student or that effects the results of another student, including but not limited to, taking unauthorized material into an exam room, misconduct during an examination, falsifying records, exchanging or in any way supporting the passing on of information related to an examination, copying the work of another student, failing to comply with the instructions of the persons responsible for conducting an examination, impersonating another student, stealing examination papers, using an unauthorized calculator during an examination, disclosing or discussing the content of an examination, and/or fabricating data for an assignment. Consequences for malpractice may include: grade reduction, redo assignment or assessment, receiving a zero, record on student file, suspension/expulsion from extra-curricular activities or from the school. RESPONSIBILITIES IN MAINTAINING ACADEMIC HONESTY Course Advisors must: provide students with examples of conventions for acknowledging a variety of sources. provide guidance to students on proper citation and use of paraphrasing. structure assignments and conditions of examinations to prevent the possibility of malpractice. specify the types of collaboration that are acceptable and unacceptable. enforce the Academic Honesty Policy/Honor Code and appropriate disciplinary actions.
