Welcome Letter 2024-2025
Dear Students, Parents and Guardians of St. Joe’s;
Welcome to St. Joe’s. This is an excellent school, with an excellent reputation for providing top quality programs and learning opportunities. We continue to be a growing school that has a very positive culture, one that works to build connections. The year 2024-2025 will be an exciting one, with prospects available in all areas to become involved with, for all students in grades 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14.
August 2024 - Student Registration Days
All students are to be at St. Joe’s on the following dates for the registration process, that includes picking-up textbooks, locker assignments, photos, school ID and making any potential timetable changes.
Different students come to St. Joe’s on different days between 08:30 am and 2:30 pm for registration:
Grade 12 - Friday, August, 23
Grade 10 - Monday, August 26
Grade 11 - Tuesday, August 27
Year 13 and 14 students - Wednesday, August 28
A great deal of time and effort is required of school staff to ensure each, and every St. Joe’s student timetable matches the courses requested. However, depending on your core course and option choices this is not always possible.
Student timetables will be available on the PowerSchool Parent Portal beginning on August 16.
Timetable changes will only be made for the following reasons:
Incomplete schedule - missing required courses for high school completion and/or post-secondary registration
Course conflict
Change in course mark necessitates a change in course stream (i.e. 30-1 to 30-2)
Course(s) completed during Summer School
Switching a course modality (i.e. TCL to GCL)
Course changes will not be considered for reasons other than those listed above
Please note that you must have your course changes completed before you go through the registration process (i.e. Picking-up textbooks, locker assignments, photos, school ID)
Each student will have a Teacher Advisor who they will be linked to for the duration of their time at St. Joe’s, until they graduate.
If you have a timetable change request, it must be addressed on the specified Student Registration Day indicated above. If you do not have a timetable change request, then you may proceed directly to pick-up your textbooks, locker assignments, photos and school ID on the appropriate date.
All students are expected to attend the school on the assigned August dates to complete this process. This ensures that all students have what is needed for the first day of classes.
St. Joe’s is a large high school, and we will have limitations on any course changes, due to full classes. It is anticipated that we will continue to grow in student population, with the overall growth of the City of Edmonton. As we experienced last school year, this growth has an impact on what we can, and cannot do as a school, with limited space and classroom availablity.

We have a staggered entry for students.
Tuesday, September 3 – Grade 10’s only
Wednesday, September 4 – Grade 11, 12, 13, and 14 students only

School ID
Students must always wear their school-issued ID once they enter the building. This is for the safety and well-being of all students and staff. Student ID is also used for attendance, issuing textbooks, purchasing/re-loading ARC cards (Edmonton Transit bus passes) and to access the library.
First Day
Grade 10 students have their first day of classes on Tuesday, September 3 for orientation, with early dismissal at 1:30 pm. Grade 11, 12, 13, and 14 students will have their first day of classes on Wednesday, September 4 for orientation, with early dismissal at 12:30 (No Grade 10 students on this day). All students will begin regular classes on Thursday, September 5.
Teacher Advisor (TA)
As always, your primary contact through to your graduating year will be your TA. Your TA will be sending you updates throughout the year, and you are encouraged to communicate with your TA and classroom teachers to regularly inquire about student progress and attendance.
Your TA will assist you with ensuring that your Graduation Plan is reasonable, attainable, and that it meets your educational goals. This will help you develop positive decisions about your education, through attendance, course questions, and guidance towards credentialing.
School Recommendations for Academic Programs
Your planning this year must focus on your exit plan from high school. Planning should include a review of the graduation requirements and the entrance requirements of the post-secondary institution you would like to attend after high school or the course requirements that your job may require, to enter the workforce. If you need assistance with this planning, please arrange a meeting with the school counselor or contact the post-secondary institution directly. You may also call upon our Graduation Coach, Mr. Swap (gr. 10-12) in Student Services or Ms. Venne (Year 13-14) in the Student Success Centre.
Athletics
Athletics will be running quickly, with Football starting on August 19.
Program Information Evening (Meet the Staff) - Pasta Dinner – September 5
Please mark your calendars as we are hosting a Program Information Evening and pasta dinner on
Thursday, September 5, 2024, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in the St. Joe’s center courtyard. This is an opportunity for your parents to meet your TA; classroom teachers, administrative links and to learn more about St. Joe’s. This is also a chance to become a contributing member of the School Advisory Committee (SAC), comprised of parent volunteers. The SAC will be present at this evening event and will meet right after the Information meeting.
The staff of St. Joe’s look forward to welcoming you for the 2024-2025 school year. If you have any questions regarding this information, please contact the school front office staff at 780-426-2010.
