Jean forest leadership academy

We are pleased to announce the expansion of the Jean Forest Leadership Academy

to Grade 11 for September 2009 with Grade 12 to follow in September 2010.

There are distinct advantages offered by all girls’ programming as shown in numerous studies conducted in North America, Britain, etc., and which have been published in major newspapers, and in leading periodicals including Time Magazine, Psychology Today, the Journal of Education Research, Education Week, and the American Journal of Education

Girls in all-girls programs:

Ø  have a greater sense of self esteem

Ø  are more inclined to choose math and science courses and excel in them

Ø  do better all-round academically and in university entrance examinations

Ø  are more likely to go on to post secondary education

Ø  have fewer stereotyped views of men’s and women’s occupations

The mission of the academy is, “To provide the finest Christ-centered learning environment which inspires young women to develop spirit, leadership, intellect, self-discovery and service.”  By identifying female roles in society and understanding what women’s issues are in learning, working, and living fully, the Jean Forest Senior High Leadership Academy will empower young people to achieve academically and grow spiritually by developing their gifts and talents.

A section of the school has been dedicated to the Jean Forest Senior High Leadership Academy.  Core subjects will be taught in an all girls classroom setting:  mathematics, science, language arts, social studies, religion, and leadership.  Students in the All Girls Academy will have access to a wide range of option courses that are available through our very successful Personalized Self-Directed Learning Program:  French, Spanish, Italian, Art, Drama, Music, Career and Technology Studies.

September 2009

We would like to welcome back our ladies who were with us last year, and would like to extend a warm welcome to our new grade 10 ladies this year! We are looking forward to the second year of JFLA being offered at a high school level!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

What does JFLA offer for students? JFLA offers a unique style of education for a select group of girls.  The ladies are able not only to take part in structured, teacher-based classes, but they are also given the opportunity to attend Academy classes within the PSDL structure. With these opportunities, our ladies, have the best of both worlds.  They are able to work at their own pace as well as take part in structured, classes for certain core subjects.

What is T.E.A.M Leadership? This is a course offered to JFLA students, where the girls are able to learn from one another. They are given the opportunity to develop and share their leadership skills. This year, the girls will be involved in numerous activities around the school each month. These include various celebration commitments, working with the EE program, organizing events, and being positive role models for the student body at St. Joe’s.

What is our focus and philosophy? Rather than focusing on book knowledge or being lectured on leadership theory, our JFLA ladies will experience real life learning. We hope to open the girls’ eyes to their potential and provide opportunities for them to share their successes. Specifically, we are going to focus this year on the ideas of listening, communication skills, empathy, humility and awareness. There will be field trips, community volunteer work, guest speakers, all of which will continue to motivating our ladies to be upstanding, confident, educated leaders of society.
