Edmonton Catholic Schools is offering a Dual Enrolment
Apprenticeship
Academy
starting this next semester.
Dual Enrolment means students are able to continue attending
their regular community high school while working toward their full
first year of apprenticeship training.
Students involved in this educational opportunity will attend
their morning classes at their current high school.
The students will then be transported to
St. Joseph
for the afternoon apprenticeship academy where they will work at
completing their first year technical period training in one of the
following four areas-- Automotives, Autobody, Welding or Carpentry.
Students in these academies will get a head
start on their apprenticeship.
Successful candidates will be able to apply to any
post-secondary technical school as a second year apprentice, saving
one full year of tuition.
This is the second year this program has been offered by the
district. All students
enrolled in the academies last year have commented they feel very
well prepared for the transition to post secondary school.
This program offers students relevant industry training that
industry recognizes. There are only 15 applicants accepted into each
academy per term. All
students and their parents are interviewed to determine the best
candidates. Teachers in
this program are Red Seal certificate holders. This means they are
registered journeymen in their trade and are capable of meeting
industry standard training.
Many of our instructors hold both a Bachelor and Master’s
Degree in Education.
There will be a parent/student information
session on Wednesday December 17, 2008 at 7:00 p.m.
The meeting will be held at
St. Joseph High School
in the Knights of Columbus Theatre. Students
interested in attending one of these academies this year must attend
this meeting with their parents.
Students interested in making this experience
part of their educational plan for next year (2009/2010) will also
find the information session very valuable.
Do you have what it takes?
Are you motivated? Are you a dedicated student with a strong work
ethic? If so—we are looking for you!
Come and join an experience that will give you a head start
on your career as a highly qualified journeyman.
CTS Academy News:
The first semester has begun with a frenzy of activities!
We began the year with a large increase of grade 10
students in the school and in our areas.
As well, we have our highest retention of grade 11 and 12
students returning to complete our upper level courses that lead
to career choices.
Very exciting times, indeed!
Please let me start at the beginning of the semester.
After our extremely successful participation at Skills
Alberta and Skills Canada last year, the National gold medal
winners in Television Production were invited to participate as
junior reporters at the World Skills Competition being held in
Calgary from August 31 to September 7.
Both members of the team graduated last year and one had
started in Red Deer College so she was unable to attend.
Andrea Clark was able to attend and Kendra Shapka, a
grade 12 student and this year’s Television Production team
member, took her place.
These young ladies worked extremely hard for the duration
of the World Skills Competition creating several videos that
were posted nightly on the Skills Canada website.
To give you an idea of the commitment to their
professions, the gold medal winner in Automotive Repair
Technician, Joshua Wiens, took time off work to go and watch the
competition in the Automotive Repair Technician because he wants
to continue to compete at the post-secondary level.
Back at school some changes have been made to the times that CTS
courses are available to students.
We are following the familiar format of offering grade 10
CTS all afternoon Monday, Wednesday and Friday and grade 11 and
12 CTS all afternoon Tuesday and Thursday.
The only exceptions to this are Automotives and
Information Technologies where the instructors are available
during the mornings as well.
This is providing additional opportunities for students
to access learning in these areas.
